DIY Window Replacement

Before you begin work on installing your own windows, you will need to acquire whatever tools you will need to complete the job. These may include a tape measure, a pry bar, a chisel or an ice pick, a spirit level, a utility knife, a reciprocating saw, drop cloths, a caulking gun and caulk, a hammer and nails - and, last but obviously not least, the windows you want to install
 Preparing for the project

1)Start by determining the style and material you want for your new windows, nowadays you can replace your windows with practically any style (casement, double hung etc.) of window; you don't have to stick with what you've got though it may be easier. Replacement windows are available in wood, vinyl, and aluminium or composite. 2)Examine your sills. Ensure that there is no sign of wood rot before you begin, if the frame is compromised then there is no point in replacing the windows. 3)After this measure your windows, it is critical that you get this right otherwise you'll be buying windows that don't fit, this is an expensive mistake to make. Take numerous measurements to make sure you get the most precise one, and then use the smallest one to ensure that your replacement fits properly. 4)When you are happy with your measurements it is time to order some home replacement windows. 5)Now it is time for the installation. Begin by removing the inside stops on your windows. Save them as you will be able to use them again. 6)Following this remove the sashes and clean up the frame. Installing the replacement windows 1)Firstly check that the window you've ordered will actually fit in the opening, place it in the frame and check the fit. 2)Caulk the inside edge of the outside window stops, and along the windowsill. 3)Put the window in the centre of the frame. Use your spirit level to ensure that it is plumb and square. Measure diagonally from corner to corner both ways to check that it is square. 4)Using the inside stops that you removed from your older window earlier reinstall the new windows. Use one-and-a-half-inch finishing nails. 5)Where the stop meets the frame, caulk. In addition, you will need to ensure you measure carefully. Take at least three measurements for the width and height of each window. Some installers may recommend taking an extra quarter of an inch off the smallest measurement, just to be safe. Double-check your new windows when they arrive. It is better to catch any mistakes out sooner rather than later.
